In 2016, The Yard teamed up with LandSky, a local creative company. We could see Hackney Wick and Fish Island changing day-by-day, buildings going down and coming up and people moving in and out around us. We wanted to capture a snapshot of the area in that moment.
We were particularly interested in the shifting landscape of work in the area. Within living memory, work in Hackney Wick has shifted radically from its light-industrial roots and now, with the arrival of whole new neighbourhoods and huge new organisations, the area looks set to change once again.
Together, LandSky and The Yard recruited a team of local volunteers, aged 7 – 70 and trained them up in interview techniques, using sound equipment and audio editing. Over several months, we set about questioning a huge cross-section of workers in the area, from teachers to tailors to tattoo artists. Our volunteer team collected hundreds of hours of footage and painstakingly narrowed our interviews down to under five minutes each.
