We’ve got quite the season to kick off 2019.
First up it’s our favourite time of year – our annual festival of the best new theatre and performance NOW 19. This year we’ve got the line up of absolute dreams – 5 weeks of double bills of phenomenal artists including Brian Lobel, Fk Alexander, Tim Etchells & Forced Entertainment, Seke Chimutengwende and so many more. We’re even offering a festival pass that saves you almost 50% off the whole festival. And we’ve programmed an absolute feast of late-night events around the festival to keep you dancing until the early hours, including our first year anniversary with our favourite queer night for the Arab diaspora Pride of Arabia, and regulars Knickerbocker, Beauty & The Beat and much much more. We spoil you.
We know that in February everyone gets cold and miserable, so that’s why we’ve got something in that’s going to get you HOT. The princes of Pecs Drag Kings are following up their ★★★★★ sell-out The 80s Show at Soho Theatre last year with a brand new one. SEX SEX MEN MEN is going to stretch your boundaries (and theirs) with a show exploring sex and masculinity and stretching cabaret to its limits. These tickets always go fast, and our new dynamic pricing system means that the faster you book, the cheaper they’ll be!
Then we’re doing a little experiment – what happens when you cross the queen of “shameless showmanship and live-art provocation”(Time Out) with a group of teenagers? Our brilliant in-house company of 15-19 year olds The Queen’s Yard Company are co-creating a brand new show over 7 months with one of live art’s wildest makers, The Famous Lauren Barri Holstein (Notorious, Barbican Centre; Splat!, SPILL festival). Over 7 months they are co-creating Really Real Teenz!, an ensemble-devised performance about teenage bodies, pop culture and scandal. If it’s anything like the roaring success of their “superb” and “stunningly honest” sold-out debut production You Do Not Have To Say Anything, you should get booking.
And as ever, don’t forget that if you’re local to The Yard you can get 30% off all of these brilliant shows (and 10% off at the bar) with a free Yard Local Card. And if you’re under 26 you can snap up any unsold tickets on the door to any show for just £5 with #NoEmptySeats.
Artistic Director Jay Miller:
“What a way to start 2019. Amazing things are happening across the venue this season – on the stage, in the bar and in Hub67, the Hackney Wick community centre The Yard runs.
“NOW always feels like the most exhilarating way to kick off the year, with the best and most radical artists making theatre right now filling The Yard for 5 weeks. Every artist is phenomenal and every show is going to be totally unique, and we can’t wait to build on the massive success of last year’s festival to bring in even bigger audiences to see this great work.
And next, we’re so proud and pleased to be giving Pecs Drag Kings their first main space production in a theatre, for a sexy, political show that’s going to give us the very best of their practice combined with something entirely new. And finally, what a privilege to have Lauren Barri Holstein working with our Queen’s Yard Company. They are making work that does not usually happen with young people, and having the conversations that we need to be having. Only at The Yard could this work happen, with this diverse group of sharp young performers.
For many, 2019 is a scary prospect. But we’re not scared – we’re excited.”
P.S. – that’s not all we’ve got in store for you. Keep your eyes peeled before the year is out for a very special announcement that we’ve been sitting on. It’s a 6 week production for Spring 2019 directed by our founder and Artistic Director Jay Miller, alongside the creative team behind our most successful show ever, the ★★★★★ smash-hit This Beautiful Future.
See you soon,
