What’s a Black Out Night?
A Black Out Night is an initiative aimed at crafting an environment where the Black community can collectively engage with, and discuss events in the performing arts, film, and other cultural spaces.
Coined by playwright Jeremy O. Harris (Daddy; Almeida, Slave Play; New York Theatre Workshop, the Golden Theatre), Black Out nights have taken place across the US and the UK.

Has The Yard done nights like this before?
In 2021 and 2022, we hosted a trio of 100 Black Men nights—a similar initiative specially curated for Black men. This was conceived by Lanre Malaolu, as a response to his groundbreaking show, SAMSKARA.
Why are you doing this?
The Yard reimagines theatre to reimagine the world. And we believe that sometimes that reimagining is made more possible, and more powerful when you are with people who share your experiences of life.
The overwhelmingly positive response following our 100 Black Men nights has only strengthened this belief.
Here are some of the audience responses from SAMSKARA 100 Black Men nights:
“All Black men in the audience… unreal scenes.”
“The vibes are unmatched.”
“An audience in a theatre space with only Black men, of different ages, witnessing a theatre piece that they can identify with, and found a release. A momentous moment.”
Can I attend this performance if I’m not Black?
This performance has been programmed specifically for Black audiences. But we will not turn anyone away, or question anyone’s identity.
What can I expect from the night?
Our bar will be open from 6pm, and the show will begin at 7:30 pm. It’ll run for approximately 1 hour and 45 minutes*.
There will be a free post-show discussion with the director and our Deputy Artistic Director Anthony Simpson-Pike and writer Rhianna Ilube, hosted by Assistant Director Taiwo Oyebola, that will last around 45 minutes.
Afterwards, we’d love for you to join us in our bar, where DJ Shafire will be playing a mixture of soulful classics and soft R&B to set the tone to keep the conversation going.
